Most Holy Redeemer - Bridesburg, Phila, PA

Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery

Bridesburg, Philadelphia, PA
Address: 4267 Richmond Street, Philadelphia, PA 19137

Although I can not find online when Most Holy Redeemer had its first burials, the demand grew in 1883 as Philadelphia's German Catholics were outgrowing the existing St. Peter's cemetery.  In 1887 the ground was blessed as Most Holy Redeemer.

The grounds were not originally intersected by city streets and it is evident that some of the homes were not there as I saw many graves facing directly into the brick side of some of the residences.

Before I share my own photos from my trip it is noted that there are a few "famous" memorials located at Most Holy Redeemer.  According to Find A Grave there are memorials for the following individuals:
  • Henry "Heinie" Kappel (1863-1905): Major league baseball player who played for the Cincinnati Red Stockings and Columbus Solons.
  • Albert Joseph "Smiling Al" Maul (1865-1958): Major league baseball player who played for the Philadelphia Keystones, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Burghers.
  • Joseph Francis "Joe" Smith (1920-1999): US Congressman who served in WWII earning a purple heart and Seargent ranking.
