New Cathedral Cemetery is right next to Greenmount Cemetery, so planning a trip is easy if you are interested in seeing graves at both. The listing of "Cathedral" cemetery as a place of burial on Philadelphia records can give a little difficulty as Old Catholic Cathedral is on 48th Street, and New Catholic Cathedral is on Front Street. Both churches have very good record keeping so it shouldn't be too difficult to find out which if you see "Cathedral" listed as the cemetery on a death certificate.
Right off the bat you will notice beautiful graves at this cemetery. Unique features are the private mausoleums and crypts. The crypts have been sealed off and are built into a small hill, they would be absolutely beautiful and a very cool feature if this cemetery had been fully maintained.
In terms of the ethnic breakdown it seems as though there are a lot of Irish & German individuals buried at this cemetery. It is not overwhelming in size, but if you spend a lot of time looking at interesting graves like we do, you will need to book at least two hours for this trip.

THE GROUNDS
One of the coolest features I found here was a grave made entirely out of metal, which I'm assuming is iron. This is the first time I have seen a headstone entirely made out of an alternate to stone like this. I have seen iron crosses or hollow obelisks but I was fascinated by this one...
